My village, Lamdingin in Aceh almost razed to the ground. My mother was a victim of the 2004 tsunami, she was 19 when it happened, her parent died because of the tsunami. She told me when she wants to breakfast at that day, she saw people ran while saying "ie laot ka i eak" or sea water rises to land. She panic and start running. When she was running, she looked back and she saw 30 meter high water rolled black.
Though I didn’t witness the 2004 Tsunami but I got a view about the natural disaster from my parents.
The government and local authorities struggled to disseminate accurate information. Rumors flew faster than facts, leading to mass evacuations from coastal areas like Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Saint Martin’s Island. In the confusion, many were injured due to the panicked situation.
The tsunami waves hit the islands of the Maldives early in the morning (around 9am). In the Maldives, 82 people died and 24 reported missing due to the Indian Ocean tsunami. Inhabitants of several islands were forced to migrate due to the severity of the damage caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami to their island.
Students from schools in 26 countries will have the unique opportunity to talk to NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, onboard the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 12:15 pm UTC.
During this event, students from the Indian Ocean region will have the opportunity to learn about natural hazard research and monitoring, as seen from the unique perspective of an astronaut in the International Space Station (ISS). Nearly 90 questions were submitted by schools in the region with 16 selected questions for the live event. The questions for the astronaut will cover topics such as oceans and coastal resilience, life in the ocean and on coasts, tsunamis, climate change, as well as improving preparedness in the region.
At this live conversation, students from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Pakistan, South Africa, Timor-Leste, and the United Arab Emirates will be able to ask astronaut Sunita Williams questions ranging from, “What is it like to be an astronaut?” to “How do you monitor the ocean from space?”.
