Bridging Past Lessons
with Future Preparedness

2024 commemorates the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, one of the most devastating tsunamis in history. This milestone serves as a poignant reminder of nature’s immense power and the critical need for preparedness. To address this, we have created Tsunami United—not only as an innovative initiative to involve and educate the next generation on tsunami risks, awareness, and preparedness but also as a global movement to empower the Next Generation of Coastal Resilience Guardians.

The Initiative

What Do They Know About 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami?

Let's Talk To Space!

Students from schools in 26 countries will have the unique opportunity to talk to NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, onboard the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 12:15 pm UTC.

During this event, students from the Indian Ocean region will have the opportunity to learn about natural hazard research and monitoring, as seen from the unique perspective of an astronaut in the International Space Station (ISS). Nearly 90 questions were submitted by schools in the region with 16 selected questions for the live event. The questions for the astronaut will cover topics such as oceans and coastal resilience, life in the ocean and on coasts, tsunamis, climate change, as well as improving preparedness in the region.

At this live conversation, students from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Pakistan, South Africa, Timor-Leste, and the United Arab Emirates will be able to ask astronaut Sunita Williams questions ranging from, “What is it like to be an astronaut?” to “How do you monitor the ocean from space?”.

The live event will be live broadcast on YouTube on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 12:15 pm UTC via this YouTube link.
The educational activity is promoted by the Tsunami United initiative, a project engaging students in the Indian Ocean region as part of the 20th commemoration of the 2004 tsunami.
The radio contact will be arranged by the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program.

This initiative is supported by the NASA Earth Science Applied Sciences Disasters program, UNESCO Office Jakarta, Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre of UNESCO-IOC (IOTIC UNESCO-IOC), The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (BMKG), the UNDRR United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and U-INSPIRE Indonesia.
